Recent Action
Wind energy development could be a big boon for Wisconsin’s economy.
Victory for homegrown, clean energy!
After significant lobbying at the capitol, and activating activists across the state, the Legislature responded by approving a state budget that provides $15 million in loans and grants for renewable energy projects. This funding will provide critical support for building the clean energy industry and hitting our renewable electricity and fuel goals.
“This is a major victory for clean, homegrown energy in Wisconsin,” said Dan Kohler, Wisconsin Environment director. “We are uniquely positioned in Wisconsin to be able to benefit the environment and our economy by investing in wind power and bio-fuels.”
Wisconsin Environment has focused its efforts on building support for two of the goals Gov. Jim Doyle has put forth: getting 25 percent of Wisconsin’s electricity from renewable sources by 2025 and getting 25 percent of Wisconsin’s transportation fuel from renewable fuels by 2025.
The Safe Climate Act
Over the past year, we’ve also urged members of our state’s congressional delegation to support the Safe Climate Act. The bill would cut the nation’s global warming pollution 80 percent by 2050, a change most scientists agree is necessary to avert catastrophic climate change.
So far, Reps. Tammy Baldwin, Steve Kagen, Ronald Kind, Gwen Moore and David Obey have joined 137 other members of Congress in agreeing to co-sponsor the legislation.
“When it comes to pollution, people have been paying the price for too long—breathing unsafe air, risking the worst effects of global warming, and footing the bill for clean-up,” said Emily Figdor, our chief advocate on global warming policy in Washington, D.C.
Mission Statement
We all want clean air, clean water and open space. But it takes independent research and tough-minded advocacy to win concrete results for our environment, especially when powerful interests stand in the way of environmental progress. That’s the idea behind Wisconsin Environment. We focus exclusively on protecting Wisconsin’s air, water and open space. We speak out and take action at the local, state and national levels to improve the quality of our environment and our lives.
