A plan to save Wisconsin's lakes
Wisconsin’s lakes are a treasure. Unfortunately, chemicals in lawn fertilizer—particularly phosphorous—have been polluting our lakes, causing massive algae blooms that affect water quality, harm wildlife and prevent recreation like fishing and boating.
That’s why Wisconsin Environment is calling on the state Legislature to pass a ban on phosphorous in fertilizer. Several counties in Wisconsin have already implemented similar policies, with impressive results. Now, we need to take their progress statewide to protect all of Wisconsin’s lakes.
“We need to protect our lakes for our children and future generations,” said Dan Kohler, Wisconsin Environment Director. “Passing a law to keep phosphorus out of fertilizer—and out of our lakes—is a common sense solution to a serious problem.”
