The Campus Climate Challenge

What's New

Last fall, after Wisconsin Environment research and advocacy calling on University of Wisconsin campuses to address global warming pollution, Gov. Doyle announced a five-year program to make four campuses energy-independent (Green Bay, Oshkosh, River Falls, and Stevens Point). At the UW-Stevens Point news conference announcing the program, Gov. Doyle encouraged WISPIRG student chapter chair Matt Guidry to participate in establishing the plan to become energy independent. WISPIRG students are now working with the committee planning renewable energy projects at UW Stevens Point and working on similar projects at UW Madison and UW Milwaukee.

How You Can Help

Campuses across country are running and winning clean energy campaigns and more are joining the fight every day. Use the challenge map to see if there is a campaign on your campus.  Contact Mary Nicol, Campus Climate Challenge Coordinator at mary@studentpirgs.org to help you get started with your campaign!

Background

There has been a lot of talk about the problem of global warming, but almost no one is talking about solutions—even though we have everything we need right now to solve the problem. We already have cars that get 100 miles per gallon, and the technology to get almost all of our energy from clean sources like wind and solar power.

That’s where students come in. This is our problem, and it’s up to us to be the ones to solve it, starting right here on campus, right now. So we’re organizing the Campus Climate Challenge, working to transform our schools, reduce our global warming pollution down to zero, educate our fellow students about global warming solutions, and show the public what’s possible.

Wisconsin Environment is working with students across the state and the country as a supporter of the Campus Climate Challenge, calling on colleges and universities to get deep reductions in global warming pollution from campus sources, and to be nearly “climate neutral” by 2050.

Are you up for the Challenge? Over 300 high schools and colleges have joined the Campus Climate Challenge. By 2008, over 1,000 schools will be participating! For more info, visit http://www.wispirgstudents.org/campus-climate-challenge.
